FAMILY REUNIFICATION ACTION SAKE-BULENGO

Since February 9, thousands of displaced people have flocked to the city of Goma fleeing clashes around the city of  Sake. Several families had to travel on foot for a distance of 27 km as the crow flies. But also several other families arrived scattered, children separated from their parents and family members. As displacement was immediate, many families did not have the opportunity to reunite before fleeing.

To solve this urgent problem, we propose to:

Organize an action of reunification of families through telephone contact and identification of children sought by their families through the inspection of different sites of displaced persons.

More specifically:

  • Assemble three teams of volunteers, one of which rotates between Sake-Goma

  • Set up two reunification points, one in the Bulengo camp and another in Sake in front of the Kamuronza Group office

  • Facilitate telephone contact between lost members holding the  telephone details of their loved ones

  • Organize the capture of photos of found children and parents looking for their parents, to be displayed symmetrically in Sake and Bulengo camp to facilitate facial recognition

  • Organize the movement of children whose parents are located to them by the rotation team.

This action, projected over a week if the security situation allowed it, could make it possible to reunite hundreds of children reported lost during these displacements. The communication department could therefore join the teams of volunteers to facilitate the capture and display of images.

Beyond the assistance to live, the erection of shelters, there is the urgent need for action to reunite families, an action to serve the stability of the mental health of the concerned but also for their protection.  This could be complemented by other forms of assistance, at least for reunited families, although this can be done concomitantly.
